Surprise, excitement and happiness—those are the feelings I experienced when I learned that I had been chosen as Peñista del Año 1995.
Surprise, because I never imagined that I could one day be named Peñista del Año. I always thought it was an honour reserved for those crew members who work tirelessly behind the scenes long before the festivities begin, organising performances, preparing the crew premises and, as we often say, doing all the hard work needed to make the celebrations the best they can possibly be.
Excitement, because ever since I was twelve years old, like all my friends, as the San Roque Festivities drew near the anticipation would build. We all hoped our parents would let us stay out on that magical night of 15–16 August. Our greatest excitement throughout the year was walking up to Saint Roch, enjoying the traditional hot chocolate, calling for the young bulls in Plaza del Mercado, and washing away our tiredness with a swim in the river.
Happiness, because there is no greater joy than being a crew member in the most vibrant, colourful and lively festivities of all—the San Roque Festivities.
To the younger crew members, I encourage you to keep this wonderful tradition alive, united by friendship and the joy of celebrating together.
Finally, I would like to congratulate every crew, and especially my own, Unión Crew, on its 35th anniversary.
