It is only right to be grateful, and for that reason I would like to thank my president and her board of directors, the crews that voted for me, my group of friends who put up with me every year, and, above all, my family for this recognition.
When I was told that I had been chosen as Peñista del Año, I received the news with great excitement and pride. My thoughts immediately went back to all my years as a crew member, and to the friends and companions with whom I have shared and enjoyed so many San Roque festivities.
I first became a crew member at the age of fourteen. What attracted me most about San Roque was decorating the crew headquarters, the number of people who came together to work, have a few beers, exchange ideas while preparing the festivities, and make sure everything was ready before the “Chupinazo”. Nowadays, I feel that this tradition is gradually disappearing, and that is a real shame, because it was a wonderful prelude to the festivities where we all enjoyed spending time together. For that reason, on behalf of all crew members, I would like to thank everyone who, year after year, makes these celebrations possible.
The brass band, the streets, and the bass drum have always been another of my great passions. I especially encourage younger people to get involved so that this San Roque tradition continues and can be enjoyed by people of every age.
I also remember with great affection those who are sadly no longer with us. Just a few days ago we lost Antonio (el pintor). Before him, we said goodbye to Carmelo (el chispas), years earlier to José Antonio (Noguerol), and to many others who helped me experience San Roque with such intensity.
I would like to dedicate this recognition to everyone who is still with us and to all those we miss.
